Honours courses in English were introduced in this college during the academic session 1996-1997
There is no denying the fact that education plays a vital role in the overall progress and advancement of a nation. It is also necessary to expand the intellectual horizon and upgrade the morality of individuals. From pragmatic point of view, English is of enormous significance. With a view to expanding the periphery of honours teaching and to facilitate the learners of this district and adjacent regions, the necessity of initiating honours courses was greatly felt. The head of the department at the time of launching the honours courses was Mr Shah Muhammad Farhad. The number of students at that time was 24 The former heads of the department, Prof Dr S M Abdul Khalaque and Prof Hafizur Rahman served as the Chairman of Sylhet Education Board and Jashore Education Board respectively. Apart from this, Prof Shah Muhammad Farhad was assigned with the task of performing the role of the Controller of Dhaka Education Board. Some of the former students of this department are currently serving in some important government offices. Mr Rabbani is serving as an Additional Superintendent of Police, Gazipur. Mr Jahangir Mollik is serving as the SP of Barguna. Rahima Akter Lucky is also a high-ranking police official. Mr Sajal Das is a member of BCS (Admin) Cadre. Subarna Sarker, Mukul Maitra and Nazmul Hasan are of the same cadre. Falguni Bagchi qualified for BCS (Foreign Affairs) Cadre. Antora Mallik is serving in BCS (Food) Cadre. Mr Salauddin, Rebeka Sultana, Asrafunnhher Ankhi and Surojit Chakrawarty are the respected members of BCS (Education) Cadre. Sabrina Putul qualified for BCS (Audit & Accounts) Cadre.
